Solar in the UK: What next for the solar industry?
On the 22 July 2015, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) issued a consultation paper proposing to end eligibility for ROCs for projects below 5 MW, subject to retention of ROC eligibility for projects which fulfil specified "grace period" criteria.
Some developers are still working on projects above 5 MW with a view to participating in the autumn CfD auction scheduled but it is unclear whether this will go ahead. A FiT review is imminent and it is clear that FiTs are providing internal rates of return well above DECC’s target rate of 5-8 percent.
The UK solar industry has been hit by setbacks before and has overcome them and now the holy grail of grid parity is tantalisingly close. Reductions in the cost of modules and other equipment over the next few years are widely predicted and technology is increasing in efficiency. Reductions in other costs such as grid costs and planning fees are more difficult. Developer fees will obviously come down and landowners will have to get used to lower rents than have been the case.
It is difficult to say when grid parity for large-scale solar in the UK is likely to happen, particularly if wholesale energy prices maintain a downward trend, but most commentators think that it is likely to be by 2020 and possibly earlier than that.
There is no reason (subject to planning and grid constraints) why solar should not have a very positive future in the UK. Join Solar UK on November 12th to find out from the experts the best way forward in 2016. This one day event will be a master class in understanding where the supply chain is going and how to be part of the solar success story.
Registration is open for the 5th Solar UK Conference and Solar UK Industry Awards. Each booking includes entry to all presentations and a tour of the BRE Innovation Park. In addition, price includes lunch, drinks and inclusion at the evening Awards event. This is a conference of substance with first class networking opportunities. Places are limited.
Regulatory update: ROCs, FiTs and CfDs; The transition from tariffs to energy parity; UK Solar - Where to next?; Value of energy storage and aggregation to UK grid; Green energy legacy or fallacy?; Siemens Financial Services; Opportunities for solar PV plus storage at the start of a new policy; Why the crowd is essential to a secure energy future?; What next for solar PV financing?; Cost reductions, efficiencies & market impact of MIP; Beating the UK’s solar talent and skills shortage.
Solar UK Awards
At the conference we will be presenting the Solar UK Industry Awards. (1st parts before coffee break and 2nd part before lunch). 10 trophies will go to the best in class and recognise the excellence that exists in the industry.
